before we dig in, i want to preface this by calling myself out for publicly starting a monthly newsletter about my favorite new music finds and immediately skipping a month! hehe life happened! you likely didn’t notice! life is happening to all of us, all the time?! anyway, i recently had the opportunity to create my artist page on a new music platform called subvert.fm (this is not an ad). it is currently in alpha testing, but members of the platform are able to browse through music uploaded by other early adopters. for the past week or so, i have been finding absolute gems from artists i’d otherwise hadn’t heard of, and that i don’t even have any mutuals with (rare that i find a new music project that i don’t have at least one other person in my sphere already tapped into). one of these gems, an unreleased album by run logan run that i realized only while putting this newsletter together isn’t dropping publicly until july.

the genres i used above are all pulled from release metadata on subvert. a quality of mine that i feel both liberated and slightly embarrassed by is that i have a really hard time placing music in genres, although i do my best to try. i especially find this difficult with my own music, but it’s an issue i face pretty often because i’m usually drawn to music that plays with and pulls from many different music styles. as someone who djs regularly, this gets tricky when working out b2bs haha, but when it comes to my own dj sets, it’s very much an energy and vibe type of music organization that happens in my head and in my rekordbox. so i’ve decided to let whoever reads this into my mental process by sharing my three favorite finds this month organized into the categories: smooth, sharp, and spiky. sharing via bandcamp while subvert is not yet public! so excited for it be public though because there’s a lot i’m finding that i want to share!!

SMOOTH
Soul Sleep by quiet winter
via Sad Boy Records and Tapes
[ambient, post-rock, experimental]

p.s. while we’re on the topic of smooth, i curated my favorite recent ambient & downtempo releases for a friend’s new music discovery project, gigabel.io, you can stream that mix here (no signup required). features tunes from Julianna Barwick & Mary Lattimore, Nashpaints (thx dave p. for the rec), Art School Girlfriend + more.

SPIKY
BUENOv7 + Mescla 3 by bbsanii
[atmospheric, tech, latin]

SHARP
Mothclub by Bane:9
via Carpaccio Cathedrale
[industrial dub, breakbeat, club]

more next month! including a new EP from OLAN releasing on my record label .WAVCAVE! you can currently stream/buy the first two singles + pre-order a limited edition CD exclusively on bandcamp. i’d say this EP lands somewhere between smooth & spiky:

and finally, here are 25 tracks i’ve been rinsing lately:

oh hey, and i’m djing a warehouse party in philly this saturday night (4/25) alongside i. jordan + lotits.
if you’re in the philly area, grab tickets here.

enjoy the music <3
