my stomach has been hurting all day, and i’ve been feeling anxious for the better part of a week - but i did get some good news today. and as i’m listening to a bunch of incredible music i discovered recently, i’m feeling a little lighter than before. on the phone with my manager while receiving the good news, i said “if i don’t have music in my life in some form, i might blow my top off.” i complain a lot about the state of the music industry, but i have no complaints about the state of music. there are so many talented artists sharing their work that aren’t getting playlisted, cannot afford a publicist, and are not maneuvering online with the goal of virality. the digging takes time, but it’s so worth it. i get to melt off anxiety temporarily while listening, and i get the bonus benefit of feeling inspired to do the same for others. i’ve been enjoying the dig on subvert lately (this is not an ad, i genuinely have found so much great music on it as a user and artist on the platform). below are a few albums i came across while surfing subvert (organized by smooth, spiky and sharp!):
SMOOTH
looking into people's windows by 3030NATE
via 30/30
[ambient, experimental, alternative hip hop]
listening to this album smooths the brain (non-derogatory).
SPIKY
origami by Francis Bleu
via Bleu Hour Recordings
[abstract hip hop, psychedelic, downtempo]
another brain smoother, but somehow makes the brain dance as well.
SHARP
how tall is your wall? by WTNS
via Shudring
[big beat, dub, trip hop]
discovered this album a month or so ago, and immediately dug into WTNS’ entire catalog. a new favorite of mine - feels like she is pulling threads i’ve been desperately craving to experience as a listener for years now. i’m patiently waiting for other people to catch on.
