i planted a small fig tree in the garden bed of my yard three years ago.

every year, i made no precautions over winter and watched it die just to revive again each spring. last year, i wondered why it had yet to fruit.

my portuguese mother, a woman with the greenest thumb, wondered if perhaps i planted some other type of tree considering how large it had grown and still bore no fruit.

this morning, i had a cup of coffee in my yard with my girlfriend. the fig tree now towers over the neighboring sage plant in my garden bed, reaching into the yard like a massive shrub. i once again found myself wondering if i had even planted a real fig tree in the first place.

but this morning after closer inspection, i noticed the very first fig - growing in a sliver of sunlight.

taking it as a sign to stay the course.
